Cortisol Phenolic

Cortisol is the primary glucocorticoid produced by the cortex of the adrenal gland.  Its principle physiological actions are:

• to increase
• hepatic gluconeogenesis,
• hepatic glycogenolysis, and
• protein catabolism;
• to inhibit ACTH secretion (negative feedback mechanism);
• to maintain blood pressure by sensitizing arterioles to the action of noradrenaline and renal excretion.

Of the secreted cortisol in circulation, 90% is bound to protein; mainly, to cortisol-binding globulin (CBG).

Note that serum cortisol concentration shows diurnal variation, with its highest concentration being after waking, then declining throughout the day.  The analysis of serum cortisol is used for the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the adrenal gland.
